Description

French Onion Potatoes combine the comforting flavors of French onion soup with baked potatoes, making for a rich, cheesy side dish or main meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 10-oz can French onion soup
  • 1 1-oz envelope dry onion soup mix
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted
  • 2.5 lbs russet potatoes
  • 2 cups shredded gruyere cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine the condensed soup, dry soup mix, and melted butter. Stir well to mix everything together.
  3. Peel the potatoes and cut them into 1-inch pieces. Add these pieces to the soup mixture and stir to ensure they are well coated.
  4. Pour the mixture into a 13×9 inch baking dish, spreading the potatoes evenly in the dish.
  5. Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake at 375°F (190°C) for 30 minutes.
  6. After 30 minutes, remove the foil and continue baking for another 30-45 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender. Stir 2-3 times during this baking time to help them cook evenly.
  7. Once the potatoes are tender, top them with the shredded cheese. Cover the dish tightly with foil again and let it rest for about 5-10 minutes to allow the cheese to melt perfectly.

Notes

Cut potatoes evenly for best cooking results. You can use different cheese varieties as an alternative to gruyere. Enhance the flavor by adding sautéed onions or garlic.
