Description

A delightful chocolate confection topped with fluffy buttercream frosting, perfect for celebrating love and special occasions.


Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • Red food coloring (optional)
  • Buttercream frosting
  • Decorations (e.g., chocolate hearts, sprinkles)


Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla to the dry ingredients and beat until combined.
  4. Carefully mix in boiling water until the batter is smooth. (The batter will be thin.)
  5. If using, add red food coloring to achieve your desired color.
  6. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans.
  7. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  8. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn out onto wire racks to cool completely.
  9. Once cooled, frost with buttercream frosting and decorate as desired.

Notes

For best results, use room temperature ingredients, sift dry ingredients, and avoid overmixing.
