Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup boiling water
- Red food coloring (optional)
- Buttercream frosting
- Decorations (e.g., chocolate hearts, sprinkles)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Add buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla to the dry ingredients and beat until combined.
- Carefully mix in boiling water until the batter is smooth. (The batter will be thin.)
- If using, add red food coloring to achieve your desired color.
- Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn out onto wire racks to cool completely.
- Once cooled, frost with buttercream frosting and decorate as desired.
Notes
For best results, use room temperature ingredients, sift dry ingredients, and avoid overmixing.
