Description

Smothered potatoes are a classic Southern comfort dish. Tender slices of potatoes are cooked in a creamy, flavorful gravy made with onions, butter, and seasonings. A family favorite for generations.

Ingredients

2 lbs Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes, peeled and sliced 1/4-inch thick

1 large onion, sliced or diced

3 tbsp butter

2 tbsp all-purpose flour

1.5 cups milk or heavy cream

1 tsp salt

1/2 tsp black pepper

1/2 tsp garlic powder

1/4 tsp paprika

1/2 tsp thyme

Instructions

1. Peel and slice potatoes into 1/4-inch rounds. Rinse and pat dry.

2. Sauté onions in butter over medium heat until soft.

3. Stir in flour to create a roux. Cook for 2–3 minutes, stirring constantly.

4. Slowly add milk or cream while whisking until smooth.

5. Add salt, pepper, garlic powder, paprika, and thyme. Simmer for 5 minutes.

6. Layer potatoes in a skillet or baking dish. Pour gravy evenly over them.

7. Cover and cook on stovetop for 25–30 minutes or bake at 375°F for 45–60 minutes.

8. Optional: Add shredded cheese or fresh herbs before serving.

Notes

Double-cooking the potatoes (boiling then smothering) creates an ultra-creamy texture.

Add cheddar or cream cheese for extra richness.

Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 4 days or freeze for 3 months.
