Ingredients
- 12 oz elbow macaroni or cavatappi pasta
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups milk
- 1 cup smoked gouda cheese, shredded
- 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (optional for topping)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (optional for topping)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Cook the pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Whisk in the flour and cook for about 1 minute to form a roux.
- Gradually add the milk, whisking constantly until the mixture thickens.
- Stir in the smoked gouda and cheddar cheese until melted and smooth.
- Add garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
- Combine the cooked pasta with the cheese sauce and mix well.
- Pour the mac and cheese into a greased baking dish. For a crispy topping, mix breadcrumbs with olive oil and sprinkle on top.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes until bubbly and golden brown.
- Let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
