Description

This recipe combines the classic flavors of pizza into a delicious grilled cheese sandwich, perfect for lunch or dinner.

Ingredients

  • 4 slices sourdough or rustic Italian bread
  • 4 ounces fresh mozzarella, sliced
  • 1.5 ounces grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 medium ripe tomato, thinly sliced
  • 8 to 10 fresh basil leaves
  • 4 tablespoons pizza sauce or good-quality marinara
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • Pinch of salt
  • Pinch of freshly ground black pepper
  • Pinch of dried oregano (optional)

Instructions

  1. Spread one side of each slice of bread with softened butter.
  2. Flip the bread slices and spread 1 tablespoon of pizza sauce on the unbuttered side of each slice.
  3. Arrange mozzarella slices, tomato slices, and fresh basil leaves on two of the bread slices, sauce side up.
  4. Sprinkle grated Parmesan, salt, freshly ground black pepper, and dried oregano if desired evenly over the cheese and vegetables.
  5. Top with the remaining bread slices, keeping the sauce side facing in and the buttered side facing out.
  6. Heat a nonstick skillet over medium-low. Place the sandwiches in the skillet and cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side, pressing gently, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese has melted.
  7. Remove sandwiches from the pan, allow to cool for 1 minute, then slice and serve immediately.

Notes

Use fresh ingredients for the best taste and adjust toppings to your liking. Low heat will ensure perfect cheese melting.
