Description

A comforting dish combining savory ham and hearty potatoes in a rich, creamy sauce topped with melted cheese.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups diced ham
  • 4 cups sliced potatoes
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add the flour to make a roux, stirring for about a minute until golden.
  3. Gradually whisk in the milk and cream, and heat until the mixture thickens.
  4. Stir in garlic powder, salt, and pepper, and mix well.
  5. In a greased baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes, followed by half of the ham, and sprinkle half of the cheese.
  6. Pour half of the cream mixture over the layers. Repeat the layers with the remaining ingredients.
  7. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  8. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes until the top is golden and bubbly.
  9. Let it cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

Choosing starchy potatoes like Russets or Yukon Golds helps to achieve a creamy texture. Make sure the potatoes are evenly sliced for uniform cooking.
