Description

A comforting and traditional dish made with tender black-eyed peas and smoky ham, perfect for celebrations or any day of the year.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound dried black-eyed peas
  • 6 cups water or broth
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 smoked ham hock or 2 cups diced ham
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon thyme (optional)
  • 1 bay leaf (optional)

Instructions

  1. Rinse and soak the black-eyed peas overnight, or use the quick soak method by boiling them for 5 minutes and then letting them sit for 1 hour.
  2. Drain the peas and place them in the crock pot.
  3. Add water or broth, chopped onion, minced garlic, ham hock or diced ham, salt, pepper, thyme, and bay leaf.
  4. Stir to combine all the ingredients.
  5. Cover and cook on low for 360–480 minutes or on high for 240–300 minutes, until the peas are tender.
  6. Remove the ham hock, shred any meat, and stir it back into the peas.
  7. Serve warm as a main dish or side.

Notes

For the best texture, don’t skip the soaking step. Adjust the salt according to your broth’s saltiness. Consider using smoked turkey for a healthier option.
