Ingredients
- 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract
- 1 large egg
- Red and green colored sugar (for decoration)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
- In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and peppermint extract.
- Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture until well combined.
- Divide the dough in half; dye one half red with food coloring.
- Take a small piece of each dough (red and white), roll into thin ropes, and twist together to form candy cane shapes.
- Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Sprinkle with colored sugar.
- Bake for 9-10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
- Allow to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
Notes
For a stronger mint flavor, you can increase the peppermint extract slightly. Store in an airtight container for up to a week.
