Description

A delightful, hearty dish capturing classic Southern breakfast flavors, perfect for family gatherings and brunch.

Ingredients

  • 10 oz buttermilk biscuits
  • 1 lb breakfast sausage
  • 6 large eggs
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • 2 cups shredded cheese (divided)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 packet (2.75 oz) sausage gravy mix

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking pan.
  2. Press the biscuit dough into the bottom of the prepared pan, making sure it covers the base evenly.
  3. In a skillet over medium heat, brown the breakfast sausage until fully cooked. Drain any excess fat and then layer the sausage evenly on top of the biscuit base.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, salt, and pepper. Pour this mixture evenly over the sausage.
  5. Sprinkle 1 cup of the shredded cheese over the egg and sausage layer.
  6. Prepare the sausage gravy according to the package instructions by combining water and the gravy mix in a saucepan. Cook until thickened, then pour it over the casserole.
  7. Top with the remaining cup of shredded cheese.
  8. Bake for about 35 minutes, or until the eggs are set and the cheese is bubbly. Let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

For added nutrition and flavor, consider mixing in some sautéed bell peppers or spinach with the sausage. You can make this ahead and refrigerate overnight, adding extra baking time if cold.
