Description
A traditional Italian Bolognese sauce made with ground beef and pork, slow-cooked with fresh vegetables and herbs for a rich, comforting flavor.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 carrots, finely chopped
- 2 celery stalks, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 pound ground pork
- 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 cup red wine (optional)
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 cup milk
- Fresh basil for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onion, carrots, and celery; sauté until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
- Stir in the garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes, ensuring it does not burn.
- Add the ground beef and ground pork; cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks.
- Pour in the red wine (if using) and allow it to reduce for about 3-4 minutes.
- Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Bring to a gentle simmer.
- Reduce heat to low and let it cook for at least 60 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Stir in the milk and simmer for another 30 minutes.
- Serve over cooked pasta of your choice and garnish with fresh basil if desired.
Notes
For a vegetarian option, substitute meat with mushrooms and lentils. Fresh herbs enhance the flavor.
